We had a blast brewing a unique, delicious Gruit with Crooked Thumb Brewery, featuring Huitlacoche (Mexican truffle), purple corn, bay leaf & Yerba Mate.
Historically, “Gruit” was beer brewed before the advent and extensive use of hops to bitter and flavor ale, and refers to ancient brewers’ use of endemic herb & spice mixtures for bittering instead.
Huitlacoche (weet-lah-KOH-cheh) is a bluish mushroom that grows on ears of corn and is considered a delicacy in Mexican cuisine, tracing its roots to the Aztecs and boasting earthy, funky, nuanced flavors. This interesting brew features a beautiful pomegranate color and herbal notes of bay leaf, with a slight earthy character from the purple corn and Huitlacoche.
Flesh of the Gods (4.5% ABV) is on tap now exclusively at Motorworks Brewing & Crooked Thumb.
