Oxford, Ohio (July 9, 2019) – Breweries from Russia to Rhode Island sent in more than 7,000 beers representing over 130 different styles for the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship. The competition is the only one to include beers from professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers, with judges from England, Canada and the United States.

In this year’s competition, Motorworks Brewing’s Datil Pepper Chocolate Imperial Porter won a Gold Medal in the Chili Pepper Beer category, its second in the competition (2016).

A dark & dastardly brew inspired by the chocolatiers of St. Augustine, Datil melds the hefty, habanero-like heat of Datil chili peppers, grown commercially in the city for a century, with rich cacao. The Ancient City is the chief cultivator of Datil peppers in the world, and the porter boasts roughly a pound of the fiery local delicacy per barrel. Bittersweet dark chocolate flavors courtesy of cacao complement the chili’s natural fruity character in a uniquely Floridian blend of sweet-heat.

While bottles of Datil are currently out-of-stock, a delicious rum barrel-aged variant is currently available exclusively in our 1014 9th St. W Taproom, but hurry—there are only two cases left!
